Week 4: iMovie: Celebrate Kansas Voices, Hernandez Family

I did this assignment about my family, how they came to Kansas 100 years ago and how my part of the family has made an impact on KC. This year marked 100 years since my great, great – grandma, Maria Suarez Colin Hernandez made the journey from San Luis Potosi, Mexico to the United States with her 11 children. The majority of the generations since have called the West Side of Kansas City home since then. Maria  was 108 years old when she died in 1961.

In the past 10o years, our family has made an impact on the west side of kc. One of my mother’s cousins owns a successful authentic Mexican restaurant on Southwest Boulevard called La Fonda El Taquito which had been passed down the generations in his family.

My grandfather, Tony Aguirre, son of Carmen Hernandez Aguirre, daughter of Maria Suarez Colin Hernandez, grew up on the West Side of KC and from the age of 17 until he died, spent his entire life serving the community there. When he died in 2006, thousands gathered at his funeral. He had coached two and in some cases, three, generations of students in various sports and also served as a mentor for those children in the community. A couple years before he died, a new community center built on the West Side of Kansas City was named in his honor as well as an annual golf tournament and a scholarship is given out every year to graduating seniors in the community in his name.

This year over 700 members of our family gathered in Kansas City to celebrate our family matriarch.

It was an incredible thing to be a part of, as 8 generations of my family gathered in a giant convention center, the youngest of us being only 7 weeks old. It took many, many tries, but eventually we were able to get everyone included in a picture that had to be taken from an upstairs balcony.

iMovie

iMovie

Price: $4.99

Using iMovie was very easy! I found it to be very user friendly. I simply chose a theme, added my photos, and added the voiceover. I had previously tried to use a mac computer to do it, thinking it would be easier, but it was not! LOve the app! I would definitely assign small movie assignments to my students in the future.
